A world record is usually the best global and most important performance that is ever recorded and officially verified in a specific skill, sport, or other kind of activity. The book Guinness World Records collates and publishes notable records of many types, from first and best to worst human achievements, to extremes in the natural world and beyond.

Terminology[edit]

In the States, the form World's Record was formerly more common. The term The World's Best was also briefly in use.[citation needed] The latter term is still used in athletics events, including track and field and road running to describe good and bad performances not recognized as an official world record: either because it is not an event where the IAAF tracks the record (e.g. the 150 m run or individual events in a decathlon), or because it does not fulfill other rigorous criteria of an otherwise qualifying event (e.g. the Great North Run half-marathon, which has an excessive downhill gradient). The term is also used in video game speedrunning when someone achieves the fastest possible time for the game and category.[1]

Culture[edit]

Malaysia is one country where world record-breaking has become something of a national fad.[2] In India, the setting and breaking of records is popular: world record registrars based in India are Limca Book of Records, World Records India[3], Unique World Records, India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records.

After kicking open the doors to twentieth-century philosophy in Thus Spake Zarathustra, Friedrich Nietzsche refined his ideal of the superman with the 1886 publication of Beyond Good and Evil. Conventional morality is a sign of slavery, Nietzsche maintains, and the superman goes beyond good and evil in action, thought, and creation. Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1886. It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach. The following is a reprint of the Helen Zimmern translation from German into English of 'Beyond Good and Evil,' as published in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche (1909-1913). Some adaptations from the original text were made to format it into an e-text. Philosophy books.
