What's old is new again.

As a throwback to a once-popular video game genre, two new downloadable games are 2-D 'platformers' — you know, where the main protagonist runs, jumps and avoids obstacles throughout the adventure.

With a nod to classic Nintendo games, Banana Kong is available for Apple's iOS devices — namely, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch — while the other digital download, TY the Tasmanian Tiger, has boomeranged onto Windows 8 PCs and tablets.

Here is a closer look at each family-friendly offering.

Banana Kong (FDG Entertainment; for ages 9+; $0.99 cents; for iOS; fdg-entertainment.com; 3.5 stars out of 4)

One of the most fun mobile games of the summer, Banana Kong has you control a gorilla trying to outrun a banana avalanche.

You'll run from the left side of the screen to the right, jump on ledges, swing on vines, hop on huge flower pedals and avoid objects that can slow you down, such as bushes, cobwebs and barrels.

Similar to the Nintendo games it is clearly influenced by, you'll unlock hidden areas, too, including an underwater sea, a cave with falling stalactites and jungle treetops. You'll have animal friends help you along the way, including a turtle, giraffe, toucan and wild boars.

Banana Kong is a breeze to control. You need only one finger to tap and swipe your way through the single-player campaign. Similar to other mobile games, like Temple Run and Jetpack Joyride, your goal is to stay alive as long as possible (measured in number of feet). Every game is randomly generated, so all the objects will be in a different place, making it impossible to memorize a specific path.

Collected bananas can be used as currency in an in-app store to purchase extra abilities, apparel and other bonuses. There's also the option to buy bunches of bananas with real money, if desired.

Banana Kong is a ridiculously fun, great-looking and challenging iOS game worth going ape for.

TY the Tasmanian Tiger (Krome Studios; for ages 4+; $4.99; for Windows 8; kromestudios.com/TY; 2.5 stars out of 4)

Going back to its roots on the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, Krome Studios' TY the Tasmanian Tiger is a 2-D platformer available at the Windows 8 Store.

While the gameplay is reminiscent of its 11-year-old predecessor, this new download adds high-definition graphics, smooth animation and a few extra features not found in the original.

But unless you have a game controller to play TY, take a pass on this one. I'll elaborate momentarily.

You'll control TY through more than 30 levels spread out over the Australian Outback — including lush rainforests, dusty plains and the Great Barrier Reef — as well as hidden areas and branching paths. Along with jumping, gliding and collecting items, you'll toss boomerangs at enemies big and small. In fact, you'll unlock different boomerangs, each with a unique ability, and cycle between them all by pressing in on the middle mouse button.

Not found in the original game, TY the Tasmanian Tiger lets you play as your favorite Aussie character in the game, along with various mini-games accessible from the main menu.

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions is a 'solid' addition to any MGS fan. It really expands the things players can do with the original MGS. There are a total of 300 VR missions. Alot of them, however, are just time attacks of the missions. If you are really competetive it is a lot of fun. Metal gear solid vr missions art. Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Special Missions in Europe) contains 300 action-packed levels with enough scintillating Snake-sneaking setpieces to last a lifetime. Originally a part of Integral. Metal Gear Solid is a stealth game developed by Konami and released for the PlayStation in 1998.It was directed, produced, and written by Hideo Kojima, and follows the MSX2 video games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which Kojima also worked on. The game was unveiled in the Tokyo Game Show in 1996 and shown in the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 1997. The biggest issue was trying to control TY, especially with the keyboard and mouse configuration. While you're instructed to use the WASD keys to move, and the keyboard to jump, you're expected to let go and switch to the mouse to aim and fire the boomerang, or click and hold the right mouse button for a power shot. Because it takes time to switch between the keyboard and mouse and back again, TY inevitably gets hit from enemies and will likely perish. Using a touchscreen tablet proved a little better, but a console-like controller is strongly recommended to get the most out of this game.

Other issues include somewhat long load times (especially the first time), no speaking in the game at all (only text) and the requirement to sign into an Xbox Live account to take advantage of all the game's features.

For under $5, TY the Tasmanian Tiger isn't a bad pick, whether you recall the original game or not. Younger kids in particular might enjoy traipsing through this colorful side-scrolling adventure.
